The Truth About SPF: What Midlife Women Really Need To Know About Sunscreen
If you feel confused about sunscreen, SPF numbers and what your skin actually needs in midlife… you are not alone.
One minute we are told SPF is essential every single day. The next we hear conflicting advice about chemicals, skin damage, ageing and vitamin D. Add hormonal changes, sensitivity, dryness and a compromised skin barrier into the mix, and skincare can suddenly feel overwhelming.
But here’s the truth.
SPF does not need to feel frightening, complicated or restrictive.
Used correctly, daily sun protection can be one of the simplest ways to support healthy, resilient midlife skin.
Why SPF Matters More In Midlife
As we move through midlife, our skin naturally changes.
Collagen production slows down, skin can become thinner, drier and more sensitive, and inflammation may show up more easily. Years of stress, hormonal shifts, lack of sleep and environmental exposure can also begin to show on the skin.
One of the biggest contributors to premature skin ageing is unprotected UV exposure.
This can appear as:
pigmentation
uneven skin tone
dehydration
loss of elasticity
fine lines
redness and sensitivity
weakened skin barrier function
And this is where SPF becomes less about “anti-ageing perfection” and more about protecting and supporting the skin you are in.
What Does SPF Actually Mean?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor.
It measures how well a product helps protect the skin from UVB rays — the rays primarily responsible for sunburn and skin damage.
A common misconception is that SPF 50 gives dramatically more protection than SPF 30.
In reality:
SPF 30 blocks around 97% of UVB rays
SPF 50 blocks around 98%
The most important thing is not chasing the highest number possible.
It is:
applying enough product
reapplying when needed
choosing a formula your skin tolerates well
wearing it consistently
Because consistency matters more than perfection.
Mineral vs Chemical SPF — Which Is Better?
This is one of the questions I hear most often in clinic.
The answer is: it depends on your skin.
Mineral SPFs usually contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and tend to sit on the skin’s surface, reflecting UV rays. These can be helpful for sensitive, reactive or redness-prone skin.
Chemical SPFs absorb UV rays and convert them into heat. Many modern formulas feel lighter and more cosmetically elegant on the skin.
There is no single “perfect” sunscreen.
The best SPF is the one:
you will actually wear
your skin feels comfortable with
supports your skin barrier
fits your lifestyle
Midlife Skin Needs Protection AND Nourishment
In clinic, I often see women focusing only on products while unknowingly overlooking the effects of stress, tension and nervous system overload on the skin.
Your skin does not exist separately from the rest of your body.
Stress can affect:
inflammation
skin healing
sensitivity
breakouts
facial tension
circulation
sleep quality
This is why I take a more holistic approach to skin wellbeing.
Healthy skin is not only about products.
It is also about:
nervous system regulation
hydration
rest
lymphatic flow
facial tension release
emotional wellbeing
supportive skincare rituals
When we support the whole body, the skin often responds beautifully.
A Gentler Approach To Midlife Skin
You do not need aggressive routines, harsh exfoliation or endless “fixing.”
Midlife skin often responds best to:
consistency
nourishment
barrier support
gentle massage
hydration
protection
calming inflammation
reducing stress load
Sometimes the glow women are searching for is not hidden inside another product at all.
Sometimes it begins with slowing down.
My Recommended Approach To Daily SPF
I always encourage clients to:
choose a broad-spectrum SPF
wear SPF daily, even on cloudy days
reapply during prolonged sun exposure
support the skin barrier with hydration and nourishment
avoid fear-based skincare messaging
listen to their skin
Skincare should feel supportive — not stressful.
Holistic Skin & Wellbeing Support
At Jane Long Wellbeing, my treatments are designed to support not only the skin, but the nervous system and emotional wellbeing too.
Through holistic facials, facial reflexology, facial tension release, lymphatic techniques and reflexology, I help women reconnect with themselves while supporting healthier, calmer and more radiant skin naturally.
Many women spend years buying products hoping for change, while the real issue may be stress, tension, overwhelm and nervous system depletion sitting underneath the skin itself.
Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do for our skin is pause.
Breathe.
And reconnect.
If you are ready for a gentler, more holistic approach to midlife skin and wellbeing, you are warmly invited to explore my treatments or join The Reconnection Circle for supportive rituals, Face Yoga, wellbeing guidance and self-care inspiration.
My Go-To SPF Recommendation For Midlife Skin
One SPF I personally love for midlife skin is the Skin Food Nourishing Day Cream SPF30 from Weleda.
I recommend it because it feels nourishing, breathable and comfortable on the skin while still offering daily SPF protection. Many women find heavier sunscreens drying, irritating or difficult to wear consistently, especially when the skin barrier is already feeling sensitive or hormonally challenged.
This formula supports the skin with hydration and a healthy glow, making it ideal for women wanting protection without that heavy or overly “clinical” feeling some SPFs can leave behind.
What I particularly love is that it supports a more simplified, gentle skincare approach — something I believe midlife skin responds beautifully to.
Because skincare should feel nurturing, not overwhelming.

It has a light texture which that leaves a subtle natural sheen on the skin.
It is SPF 30, perfect for a glowy natural look.
